Heavenly Shopping in Jalan TAR, Kuala Lumpur

JALAN Tuanku Abdul Rahman (Jalan TAR in short) was the main street in Kuala Lumpur at one time. It was originally known as Bata Road , so named because it began as a track leading to Batu village, limestone caves and tin mines. Jalan TAR has changed alot during the past 10 years. It used to have a Saturday nite market but it has now turned into a daily market.



It is located at the back alley of the Jalan TAR where it houses most of the fabric shop in town such as Globe Silk Store, Harrison, Kamdar and such. The market features food, fashion, artificial flowers, some toys.. but mostly are sold by the Malay people. You can get a good bargain for Mulsim prayer material and clothing. For example if in departmental store you will have to buy a set of children baju kurung at RM50.00 and above, here you will get it from RM20.00 onwards, bargaining is not so much here as you will find the pricing is most favourable.



During the Puasa month, you wil get to see a lot of stalls selling artificial flowers at a good price. You will also find varieties of Malay food sold there such as sweet delicacies, "kuih" such as kuih gula hangus, ketayap, kuih lapis, onde-onde, and the famous karipap. They also sell varaities of noodles, mee rebus, asam laksa and also rice such as nasi dagang, nasi kerabu and bryani and lots more to mention.

Nearby will be the Jalan Masjid India, where you will find a lot of Indian jewellery shops as well as eatery places and shops selling Indian customes at a very good bargain price.



If you love to see the real Malaysian living, you would like to tour this market. You will see all rank of people here, the Malaysian plus the weather, hot and humid. But really not that bad in the evening, so try to avoid visiting the market in the afternoon where the sun is right on top of your head. Safety here is ok, just keep your property close with you as when you tour to other country.

If you prefer a comfortable shopping, then you can go Sogo Departmental Store. The price there also not bad and it has a lot of children clothing and eating outlets. Right opposite Sogo you will find the Pertama Complex where you will find a lots of Jeans shop and opposite of the other side of Sogo you will find Campbell Complex. It offers variety of things, ie. sun glasses, clothing, watches etc. Both buildings has been there very long and a walk there just to see how KL has evolved through time. You will be able to see the 10years ago KL with the nowaday KL when you compare them to MidValley, KLCC and Sunway.

You can go to Jalan TAR via public buses, taxis and even train via STAR line and the Komuter train. Parking is a little bit of problem though, but you can park a little bit further opposite the police station. There are a few open space parking lots which charged per entry. I just love this place....... for a different shopping experince. Bringing small children will be a problem though.
